Hull looking at Andrew Davies

Posted on 10th September 2007

MiddlesbroughHull City will try and wrap up a loan deal for Middlesbrough defender Andrew Davies as Phil Brown looks to strengthen further. Brown has already completed the signing of Jay-Jay Okocha on a free transfer and will now turn his attentions to signing Davies on loan with a view to a permanent swoop.

Clubs outside of the Premiership are free to sign players on loan and Brown is keen to land his long-term target. The Tigers boss tried to land him in a £1million deal just before the transfer window closed but failed with a swoop. Brown is now set to go back in and hopes the lure of first-team football will win the day.

Meanwhile Middlesbrough player Luke Young believes that England’s future would be in safe hands if more clubs could follow the example set by the Teesside based club. Young has been impressed by the number of local lads in the dressing rooms at Rockliffe Park and the Riverside, having already played alongside the likes of Stewart Downing, David Wheater, Andrew Taylor, Andrew Davies, Seb Hines, Adam Johnson and Lee Cattermole.

“At many Premier League clubs English kids have pretty much got no chance of making it. Managers these days need instant results and you don’t tend to get that with youngsters,” said Young. “It is a real eye-opener to come to Boro and find half the dressing room from England, and they are there on merit. The youth set-up must be doing something right because I cannot think of another club producing anything like as many high class players, all with a great future in the game. The fact that the club has been successful shows that young English players have got ability, but this is one of the few clubs where they get a chance to prove it. Everyone wants the England team to do well, but realistically we are lowering the pool from which Steve McClaren can pick. That cannot be good for England.”
