Blackwell relishes result over Black Cats

SunderlandSunderland slipped out of the Carling Cup to a shock 3-0 defeat to Luton Town. Afterwards Luton boss Kevin Blackwell admitted it was sweet revenge. Sunderland beat Luton 5-0 at the same ground in May. It was a performance which won them the Championship and promotion to the Premiership. It also relegated Luton to League One.

“I think that went a long way towards repaying the fans for the 5-0 result,” said a delighted Blackwell. “That was a terrific performance from a very good Luton side. That was a strong team Sunderland had out, but we played on the front foot all night. Paul Furlong was inspirational, but from one to 11 they all did a great job. Their winning the Championship here 5-0 was like somebody winning the lottery and coming into your house to celebrate when you've got a losing ticket. They came here a fully confident, buoyant side and our youngsters were taught a lesson. I’m delighted that those who played again tonight learnt that lesson.”

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Dean Whitehead faces six months out of action after damaging his cruciate. Whitehead hurt his knee ten days ago - the day before Sunderland’s defeat at Wigan - and it was initially thought that he would be sidelined for six weeks. However this is not the case confirmed manager Keane.

“It looks as though Deano will need surgery in a couple of weeks,” said Keane after the defeat. “It looks like it’s a cruciate so that would rule him out for six or seven months, It’s been a bad day. It’s bitter blow for Deano and for us. We are missing his leadership qualities and his presence.”
