A bit of a sickener – Wilson

Posted on 28th August 2007

Hartlepool UnitedHartlepool United manager Danny Wilson admitted that his side’s Carling Cup exit was a ‘bit of a sickener’. Pools fell to a 2-1 defeat after extra time in the Carling Cup second round to Sheffield Wednesday. Hartlepool were under pressure for much of the game at Hillsborough but took a surprise lead in the second half when Ian Moore scored from close range.

Sheffield Wednesday struck back through Deon Burton to take the tie into extra-time and with penalty kicks looming substitute Yaonn Folly grabbed a winner with barely a minute left on the clock to sink the visitors.

“It was a terrific performance,” Wilson said. “We had to do some defending at times and Jan made some good saves but that’s what Cup football is all about. They pegged us back in the first half and they got in down the sides a few times but we held them out and when we went ahead I thought that would have been enough given the way things had gone. To go so close in extra time is a bit of a sickener but the lads should be proud as they put a real battling performance in.”
