Wilson praise for Liddle

Hartlepool UnitedHartlepool United manager Danny Wilson has hailed Gary Liddle for exceeding his expectations. The Middlesbrough youth team product has been a big player for Pools since his summer move. With Nelson will be back in the defence after serving a one-match ban Liddle will be allowed to push back into the midfield, which is arguably his best position and from where he has scored his four goals this term.

“When you sign a player from reserve football there is always a question mark of how quickly they can get to the required standard,” Wilson said. “We knew Lids’ qualities, he has got good strength and pace as well as ability. But it all about transferring that to league football. As far as I am concerned that transition has been spectacular, he has been fantastic for us.”

Meanwhile Wilson today called for his side to be more cut-throat in attacking positions. Pools are on the crest of a twelve match unbeaten run but have not scored more than one goal in a game since Boxing Day. Wilson wants his side to arrest the trend and rediscover their ruthless streak in time for Bury's trip to Victoria Park.

“From our perspective we are creating plenty of chances but need to be more clinical at times,” he said. “We are getting a lot of one-nils at the moment and could do with giving ourselves some more breathing space in games. At the same time it would keep my heart rate down!”
