Professional job declares Quakers’ boss

Darlington manager Dave Penney felt his side did a professional job at Grimsby Town on Saturday. Quakers recorded their third straight 1-0 win at Blundell Park with a goal eight minutes from time from Tim Ryan.
In blustery conditions made life difficult for both sides but Quakers withstood the pressure from the home side and won the game late on. The match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until Julian Joachim won a free kick on the edge of the area. Ryan’s low shot wormed its way through the keeper’s fingers and into the back of the net.
“We did a professional job in difficult conditions. We kept our shape, soaked up pressure, and had pace on the break with Julian Joachim,” said Penney after the game. “It was good to get a clean sheet again after a long run of conceding. That will do our confidence the world of good. I’m delighted we got the winner and it was also a good penalty save.”
Quakers could have been behind at the break when Dave Wheater gave away a penalty kick. Penalties have played significant parts in previous meetings between the two sides with Quakers needing two last season to record victory over the Mariners and needing one kept out during the 2004/05 campaign to record the first of a winning run of fixtures at Blundell Park which now stretches back to three years. On that day Martin Gritton scored but was ordered to retake where Sam Russell kept his second effort out.
At the same end of the ground Lee Jones produced the same result as Russell did back in March 2005. Having seen his side have to endure injury and illness Penney feels Darlington are finally starting to get some luck.
“I asked him at half time and he said it was. You sometimes get a bit of luck, we had a late goal at Bury last Tuesday when we went down to ten men and today we've had a penalty saved – you’ve got to take that bit of luck when you get it and take advantage,” said Penney. “But you could see its our turn now because there's been times when we've been losing games 1-0 and we weren't getting the rub of the green. It seemed like every time the ball dropped into our box we would concede a goal. Luck evens itself out and now it's our turn to have a bit of it.”
