Wilson dismisses move for former Quakers player

Hartlepool UnitedHartlepool United manager Danny Wilson has dismissed rumours that he was preparing to offer former Middlesbrough and Darlington attacker Craig Hignett a way back into league football. The experienced striker, who turned thirty-seven last week, has been training with Pools since before Christmas but Wilson is not planning on drafting him into the first team.

“Craig has been doing some training with us but that is far as it goes really,” Wilson said. “He has been good for the lads. Hopefully some of his good habits have rubbed off on some of the younger lads and he is a good character to have on the training ground. There is a possibility of him getting a run out for the reserves but as far as offering him a deal, it is not something that we are considering.”

Meanwhile Pools take on Wrexham this weekend in League Two but are sweating on the fitness of midfielder Willie Boland. The thirty-one-year-old former Cardiff City player is struggling to shake off a hamstring injury picked up in training which forced him to sit out last weekend's 1-0 victory over MK Dons. In his absence Lee Bullock has done well says Wilson.

“Obviously losing Willie last week was a blow, he has been excellent for us in these last few months,” Wilson said. “He is a doubt for Wrexham, it is still touch and go. There would be no point in playing him if he wasn’t 100 per cent. I thought Lee Bullock came in and did really well last week. It has not been easy for Lee because first-team starts have been a bit intermittent for him. But I thought that his performance on Saturday was the best he has produced since I have been at the club. It wasn’t the most glamorous role he has had but he did everything that was asked of him. With the likes of Tony Sweeney buzzing around and getting into the box we asked Lee to play a slightly different role than maybe he is used to. Lee likes to get in the box and getting goals is a big part of his game as well. We didn’t what to lose that but he knew he had other responsibilities as well.”
