Roeder not set to panic sign after shambles
Posted on 18th January 2007

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder says he will not make panic signings after Championship leaders Birmingham City ran out 5-1 winners at St James’ Park last night in an FA Cup third round replay. Roeder was still at his desk at the crack of dawn in his bid to try to get some much-needed defenders into the club. However he is unlikely to make signings before the weekend it appears.
“I will not be making any panic buys,” said Roeder. “In fact, my targets are exactly the same today as they were before last night's game. I am not a lemming about to run off the end of the cliff. I could easily go out and buy a couple of central defenders who are the wrong side of 30, but that’s the road to nowhere. And if the truth was told there are not many good 30-year-olds out there. January is an awful time to be trying to buy players, with clubs, for a vast number of reasons, not wanting to get rid of their players.”
Despite the result last night Roeder still faced the media, unlike some of his players. After seeing a positive result against Tottenham at the weekend Roeder was amazed at the result and the performance.
“It is unbelievable a team which can fight as hard as it did on Sunday, and at times also play very well and score three goals away from home at a place like Tottenham, can come out a few days later and not put on a performance,” he said. “However, I will not let this one game detract from the fact I know the players who have been involved over the last few weeks and months have done incredibly well. I am not going to come out and make excuses for the performance. I will apologise for the performance, that is the least I can do as the manager to our supporters.”
