Barron backs Barker to push Pools upwards

Posted on 17th January 2007

Hartlepool UnitedHartlepool United player Micky Barron has backed new comer Richie Barker to help the club get automatic promotion. The Hartlepool United captain has turned in some good performances this season and was part of a backline which has conceded just once in the last ten league games.

But Barron points to the arrival of proven forward Barker - who signed two weeks ago from Mansfield - as the key to breaking into a top three spot in League Two. Pools are currently just one point behind third and fourth placed sides Lincoln and MK Dons and a massive thirteen points clear of the final play-off place going into Saturday clash at Wrexham

“Richie is a great signing,” Barron said. “The gaffer was after him for a while and he is delighted to have got him. I have played against him a few times and he always caused us problems. Even when he played against us with Mansfield a few weeks ago he was a handful. He is exactly what we needed in the squad, a targetman who scores goals. He is big and strong and holds the ball up well – he is a nightmare for defenders. Who knows, if we hadn’t won the games we had he might not have came. If we were around the same place as Mansfield in the league he might not have thought it was worth the hassle coming here. But perhaps he saw what was happening and he has come in and he wants to help get us promoted by scoring goals and winning games.”
