Sweeney heaps praise on Wilson

Hartlepool UnitedHartlepool United player Tony Sweeney has heaped praise on manager Danny Wilson for hauling the club out of the bottom pack and in the promotion hopefuls of League Two. The Hartlepool United midfielder capped his recent stunning run of form with the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over promotion rivals MK Dons. The player now insists the club’s sights are set on catching leaders Walsall.

“It was important we got an experienced manager in, especially after last season,” Sweeney admitted. “To get Danny Wilson in has been a great thing for the club. He’s managed in the Premiership, at big clubs with big players. It took us a while to get going, but everyone can see what we are about now and it's proved the right decision. We now have Walsall in our sights. With the run we are on of course we are looking above us and at what is going on at the top. We’ve got to aim for the top now. We know what our aims are. There is a gap opening up to take the pressure off us a little bit with the teams below us, it makes it a bit harder for them to catch us up.”

Pools run of 10 wins in eleven matches and 31 points from the last 33 has propelled them into the promotion race, but it was Saturday's Goal-scorer Sweeney admitted it was an important win.

“It was a vital win, we are both up there and we haven't gone past them yet, but it really closes the gap on the teams who are above us in the table,” said Sweeney. “We have been on an unbelievable run of late and I think we have blew a few teams out of the water considering where we were in the table. It’s a pity we didn’t start the season better because we would have been right up there instead of being in fifth. That just makes it all the more frustrating. It's just great to have that winning mentality back.”
