Table could be better admits Wilson

Hartlepool United manager Danny Wilson believes the league two table could be better. Pools beat MK Dons 1-0 on Saturday to move to within one point of automatic promotion. Recent results have also seen Hartlepool slash the deficit on leaders Walsall from sixteen points to just five.
Wilson’s troops have now picked up an astonishing thirty-one points from the last thirty-three available and with the Saddlers due at Victoria Park in the middle of February just seven days after Pools’ trip to second-place Swindon - the boss believes the race for silverware is wide open.
“The league table looks good but it could be better,” said Wilson. “I’d prefer it if we were top, that is what we have got to keep aiming for. We have to keep Walsall in our sights.
"We have dragged a lot of points off them in the last few months. Some people said we wouldn’t be able to do that but we are within five points of them now, although they do have a couple of games in hand. We will keep aiming for them because they are the top dogs. Top spot has to be the target. We would be foolish to think that we just want the play-offs. We have to be positive as possible and see how far we go. Of course, we can slip out of it quite easily. There is no guarantee we will finish top six or seven so we have to keep working at it. But the aim and the dream is to go for top spot.”
A slick fifty-fifth minute finish from Tony Sweeney gave them a deserved victory after Pools out-muscled the division's bully boys. Wilson admitted he was delighted his side stood up to the physical Dons and refused to back down.
“It was terrific,” he said. “It was a big game for us. We knew we would have to have all of our battling abilities come to the fore because they are a very strong, physical side. I am delighted with it because you have to find your teeth from somewhere. You don't win anything in football being fancy Dans. You have to bear your teeth at times and Saturday was a great example of that. You have to stand up and be counted and we are doing now.”
