Magpies linked with move for Bent

Posted on 9th January 2007

Newcastle UnitedNewcastle United could have a chance at signing Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic if the Magpies can raise the money they need to secure his signature. Bent would reportedly be more than happy to make a move to the North East and to Newcastle United. He is meant to have had a chance in the summer but instead signing a new and improved deal with Charlton when Newcastle refused to cough up the large amount the London based side wanted.

However with new Charlton boss Alan Pardew admitting he will sell the England international if a sizeable offer is made during the January transfer window, Bent is once again pondering a move to the North–East excited about the possibility of eventually forming a partnership with Michael Owen.

Bent has been linked with Newcastle United previous. Back in 2003 Sir Bobby Robson attempted to sign him from Ipswich for £1 million. The move was accepted because of Ipswich's problems at the time but Bent turned down the move because he wanted regular first team football. Meanwhile Newcastle United's reported interest in Liverpool forward Peter Crouch refuses to go despite the player insisting he does not want to leave the Reds. It is unclear how much money Roeder has to spend and Newcastle's manager has hinted heavily recently that he will have to rely on loan signings to bolster his squad.
