Darlington complete double swoop

DarlingtonDarlington have swooped to land another two defensive players. Having already captured the services of Evan Horwood and David Wheater on loan manager Dave Penney has wasted no time in adding another pair to his squad.

Left back Tim Ryan arrives from cash strapped Boston United on an eighteen month deal. The thirty–two year has vast experience having played at Peterborough and Doncaster Rovers under Penney. Ryan was part of the double winning promotion side that climbed into League One. With Horwood also in the team Quakers have real competition now for a place at left back.

"He is thirty–two, played at this level for a good few years with me and I've had two successive promotions with him. He also played at Peterborough and Boston United so he knows the game inside out. He is a tough, no nonsense defender and I feel we need some of that in the club," said Penney today.

Meanwhile having impressed in a number of reserve team games Quakers have moved quickly to complete the signing of Middlesbrough player Kevin Burgess. The eighteen year old played in the reserves 1–1 draw with Rotherham yesterday and scored the equaliser.

Penney sees the youngster as someone who can sit on the edge of the first team, offer competition and slide into place as and when needed without the manager having to reshuffle other players. Burgess signs a deal until the end of the season.

"We found out he was available and he has played three reserve games for us. We've liked what we've seen, he is a tough boy and we didn't have anyone at the club at youth level who we thought could step into the first team," said Penney. "This kid can at either right back or centre half. He is a tough kid and he will do alright for us and give us that base below the first team in case we have injuries again."

Ryan will be handed shirt number 15 whilst Burgess will take shirt number 22.
