Sunderland trying to capture Warnock

Posted on 4th January 2007

SunderlandSunderland are interested in signing Liverpool player Stephen Warnock. However Sunderland boss Roy Keane looks set to miss out on the highly rated left back. Sunderland seem sure that Liverpool will sell however the player could well be wanted by another Premiership club which would put Sunderland at the back of the running to sign the player.

Blackburn Rovers are thought to be that club. Lucas Neill appears set to leave Blackburn Rovers and manager Mark Hughes sees Warnock as the ideal replacement. With Neill possibility going to Liverpool this could mean a swap deal is a possibility. The left–sided defender, who can also play in midfield, is highly rated and forced himself into the England squad last season without actually winning a cap. Warnock started 22 matches for the Reds in 2005–6 and looked to have a bright future at Anfield but the arrivals of Daniel Agger and Fabio Aurellio have massively restricted his opportunities.

In better news Lewin Nyatanga appears destined to return to the Stadium of Light despite his loan deal expiring this week. However his future is tied with that of Jon Stead. He appears to be close to getting his wish of remaining at Derby County. He joined on loan in October in the deal involved Nyatanga. Despite Keane's interest in young defenders Jonny Evans, Phil Bardsley and Warnock, he is eager to make Nyatanga's stay permanent and in doing so grant Stead's wish to remain at Pride Park.
