Quakers concede defeat in Blundell bid

DarlingtonDarlington have admitted defeat in their attempt to sign Chester City forward Gregg Blundell. Quakers have offered a five figure sum – thought to be around £25,000. However despite the player being out of contract in the summer Chester have declined the offer from Darlington and thanked them for their interest.

"We did have an offer accepted for Gregg Blundell but Chester have decided they no longer want to sell him," confirmed Quakers assistant manager Martin Gray. "It is disappointing but we do have other irons in the fire."

The news Quakers have missed out on Blundell was softened last night when they agreed to bring Mark Albrighton in from Boston United. Darlington today hope to announce the signing of the central defender, who had a loan spell with Quakers interrupted by injury. After signing in November, the 30–year–old played just three games before suffering a hamstring strain and his loan expired at the beginning of this week.

Finally Phil Stamp has left Darlington Football Club by mutual consent. The former Middlesbrough and Hearts player joined the Quakers on a free transfer in the summer of 2005. Since then the Middlesbrough–born midfielder has only played in nine first–team games, scoring just one goal. Stamp was under contract until the end of the season.

Darlington manager, Dave Penney, said: "Phil has struggled with injury this season and we came to an agreement to terminate his contract with the club. He is a great personality in the dressing room and a popular figure with the players and everyone would like to wish him all the very best for the future."
