Darlington manager to make changes

Posted on 2nd January 2007

DarlingtonWith the transfer window now open Darlington manager Dave Penney will set about adding new faces to his squad. Quakers have struggled of late with a string of poor results and the Darlington boss has identified several areas he wants to strengthen in order to get the season back on track.

Darlington have already added the loan signings of David Wheater and Evan Horwood to their squad and Penney has confirmed that there will be other additions to the team as well as some departures.

The Quakers' manager has been keen to add some new faces for some time but is keeping the identity of his targets unwraps. One of them however could be from a higher level but Penney is refusing to be called on names or even positions.

"We need a few more bodies in this club to help the players who are struggling for confidence. Some are definitely going to be moving on and there is going to be some fresh input," confirmed Penney. "We are not good enough at this moment in time to get to where I and the club wants to be. There will be some comings and goings in January."

Whilst Penney wants to keep his cards close to his chest he has revealed his desire to sign a keeper to add further depth in between the sticks. First choice keeper Sam Russell is currently injured.

David Stockdale has deputised in his place but with only youngster Jack Norton beneath him Penney wants to add another body to this important area. Whilst the Darlington manager wants a new keeper he has made it clear this is not a reflection on the performances of Stockdale.

"He has done okay, it has been a great experience for him and you can't blame him for the goals. I am not by any stretch of the imagination blaming the goalkeeper for the results we are having," said Penney. "People might look at and think Sam's not playing and we've lost games. I wouldn't blame David Stockdale for that but at the moment we only have one goalkeeper at the club."
