Owen's desire drives him onwards

Michael Owen's desire to score in front of Newcastle United's fans is driving him to recover his fitness before the end of the current season. The striker is battling to overcome the serious knee injury he picked up at the World Cup finals. Owen is confident he will be given the green light to return to action before the end of the season, with the prospect of scoring at St James' Park driving him to work hard in the gym.
"I'm really positive about my hopes of playing this season," Owen said. "Running out in front of 55,000 people again will be a great feeling because I've not experienced that for some time. I can't wait to start playing again and scoring again. That's what is driving me on."
In the absence of Owen Obafemi Martins has taken on the striking responsibility. He grabbed a confidence–boosting brace against Blackburn on Saturday. Martins made a slow start to life in the Premiership, but he is happy with his form and ready to go on a scoring run.
"I'm trying my best in training, and I'm happy to be scoring goals," he told the club's website. "I'm getting used to [the Premiership]. I never gave up [earlier in the season], I was just trying to play for the team. I knew if I did that, the goals would come. We've been playing well in the last two or three games. Sibierski's scored a lot of goals, and now I'm scoring too. I want to play in more games, and I'm sure I will score more goals. I want to make the fans happy."
